Types of Hardwood Flooring

Solid Hardwood
This type of flooring is made from a single piece of hardwood that is typically 3/4 inch thick. It can be sanded and refinished multiple times and can last for decades if properly maintained. Solid hardwood can be nailed down to a subfloor.
Engineered Hardwood
This type of flooring consists of a thin layer of hardwood veneer glued to a plywood or high-density fiberboard (HDF) core. With higher quality engineered hardwoods that have a 4mm veneer, it is possible to sand this floor several times as is the case with solid hardwood. It is more stable than solid hardwood and can be installed over concrete or in areas with fluctuating humidity levels. Engineered hardwood can be nailed down, or floated over a subfloor.
Prefinished Hardwood
This type of flooring is factory-finished with a protective coating, such as polyurethane, before it is installed. It can be less messy and time-consuming to install than unfinished hardwood, which requires sanding and finishing on-site.
Hickory Hardwood
Hickory, known for its remarkable durability and distinctive grain, is harder than oak, maple, and walnut, making it ideal for high-traffic areas.
