Types of Hardwood Installations

Hardwood flooring is beautiful and there is no doubt about it. If you are having hardwood flooring installed in your home soon, then you want to know that you are making the right choice when it comes to the type of installation and the type of wood. Below, we will cover the different installation types and some other basic information that we think you need to know about wood floors.

Installation Type 1: Glue

One installation option is glue. The way this works is a layer of troweling glue is placed on the floor and the technician will place the wood planks on top of the glue. Once the glue is dry, the planks are locked into place and will not slide around. There are moisture barrier options that can be used in conjunction with the glue to prevent water damage and mold.

Installation Type 2: Locking

The next type of installation performed is locking. This is one of the most common forms of installation and is great for those who like to put together things on their own. The best part about the locking installation method is that you do not have to use any glue, nails, staples, or anything of the sorts.

The installation is quite simple and starts with laying down an underlayment on the floor. Once done, the wood planks are then placed on the floor and locked into place together.

Installation Type 3: Nail

Another installation type is nailing the wood floors into place. The way this works is a nail is placed at an angle and inserted through the tongue of the hardwood flooring. The nail will extend into the subfloor and is hidden in place by the next row of wood that is laid down.

Installation Type 4: Staple

The staple method is similar to the nail method, however, staples are used in place of the nails.

Hardwood Styles to Think About

Lastly, we want to cover some of the available hardwood flooring styles you can choose from. Many homeowners opt in for the style they like the best, but what goes into the style options.

1. Colour

You can choose from a variety of wood colours starting with a light blond wood all the way to a deep, dark cherry wood. If you are looking for something more exotic, you will find that there are deeper, lighter, and richer colours available.

2. Species

You will have the choice of species of wood when you choose your hardwood flooring. Many common species include oak, maple, bamboo, cherry, and cork. The choice comes down to your personal preferences and budget.

3. Texture

When you think about your wood floors, think about the type of texture you want them to have. Some people like a smooth finish while others like the wood to have knots or appeared distressed.

If you plan to have hardwood flooring installed in your home, take some time to consider the type of installation you desire along with the colour, texture, and species. If you need help making a decision, the professionals at The Floor Shop can help you.
